Prejudice arises from competition (real or imagined) between groups. Competition based on material goods (land, water, money) Prejudice arises as a result of cognitive processes that lead us to stereotype outgroups. Development of stereotypes: illusory correlations, outgroup homogeneity. Maintenance of stereotypes: outgroup homogeneity, information processing biases. Group-based theories of prejudice: the old school theories. Prejudice arises due to competition between groups for some material, tangible thing. Lord of the flies: the conch shell that allows the kids to speak represents power. Two groups form and hate one another because each wants the conch shell each wants the power.
