PSYCH 2AP3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Autism Spectrum, Abnormal Psychology, Mental Disorder
Document Summary
Making a comeback now because of epigenetics. Turns out that the environment strongly affects our genomes (our epigenetic markers) Possibly in our later life as well. Those markers can be passed on to children as well. So the things that happened to you affect your children and the things that affected your parents affect you. Example animal studies suggest that what has happened to the past two generations can affect the current generation. Some studies to consider: miller & chen (2007): high socioeconomic status (ses) at 2-3 years old, predicts better gene regulation of inflammation responses in adolescent females. Also in depression and anxiety, and a wide range of stress related factors. The only explanatory factor was their ses between the ages of 2 and 3. Effects not changed by later changes in ses. The effects of this explanatory factor was irreversible.
