Another very big problem with amine hypothesis and depression - delay between drug effects and lifting of depression (if level of neurotransmitters effects depression) Within a day or 2 at most -neurotransmitters return to regular levels (if cause, we would expect that as soon as levels are back to normal depression symptoms would disappear but they don"t) As soon as you return neurotransmitter levels to normal you should see depression symptoms go away but they don"t. If drug increases activity (e. g. , dopamine), once effects occur, brain will react by reducing number of receptor sites that are active when (to bring down level of activity back to where it was)
