Psychodynamic view - way of dealing with unconscious problem. Phobic objects - symbols of inner conflict. Displacement - displace away to another target that represents it. Reaction formation - dealing with unconscious impulse by consciously experiencing the opposite emotion. Symptom substitution - if you treating only symptoms you arent getting to root of problem. Phobic objects = cs for learned fear. Faster gsr conditioning, slow extinction to prepared css (snakes, spiders) Flooding (implosive therapy) - now called exposure therapy. Based on extinction via cs- alone presentations. Testing how strong phobia people had of rats by bringing them into a room and putting a rat in a box and person would push button to make rat box get closer. 6-8 weeks of therapy sessions and came into lab at night and put on headphone and asked to play the same tape every time. Tape contained a negative interaction with rat and had to imagine themselves in the situation.
