Use to have 3 related disorders before dsm 3&4 - combined them into 1. Social interaction and communication (deficits in social - emotional reciprocity) Failure to initiate or respond to social interactions. Deficient use and understanding of gestures (not looking in direction when speaking) Echolalia - repetition of what someone else just said. Expect to see symptoms show by 2 years. Symptoms cause "clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning" Symptoms are not better explained by intellectual disability, or global developmental delay. Because there is a very high degree of comorbidity between asd and intellectual impairment. In original symptoms for autism - it included delay in development of language and now it does not because assburgers have no problem with this and its now included in autism spectrum. Fragile x (genetic condition)- shows same symptoms as autism spectrum disorder. With catatonia - voluntary movement problem (less movement/motionless for hours)
