Obsessions: persistent, intrusive thoughts, urges or images that cause anxiety or distress in most individuals, and that the individual tries to ignore, supress, or neutralize. Compulsions: repetitive behaviours or thoughts the individual is compelled to perform in response to an obsession, or according to rigid rules. Key to know that compulsions are a behaviour, whereas obsessions are a thought. O/c take more than 1 hour/day, or cause clinically significant impairment. Not due to a substance, or another medical condition. Disturbance not better explained by symptoms of another medical disorder. 1% annual, 1. 5% lifetime prevalence in u. s. Usually starts in adolescence, early adulthood (can begin in childhood) For adult ocd, male female ratio 1:1. For childhood ocd, male female ratio 3:1. 10x more common in ocd than in population generally. 33% of ocd patients have mdd when evaluated.
