PSYCH 2AA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Visual Acuity, Face Perception, Operant Conditioning
Document Summary
Field of sensation/perception is a key battleground for nativism/empiricism debate". Nativist arguments: only improve with experience in outside world. Empiricist arguments: have some biological imprint that allows them to develop quickly. Can"t ask babies the same questions you ask adults. Habituation/dishabituation technique: present baby with some visual or auditory stimulus, if something new was shown, renewed interest, lose interest with same stimulus. Operant conditioning technique: train animal to do some action for reward, difference between to notes (b and b sharp, if baby does not turn head, does not hear the difference and learn operant conditioning. Why might different sense be more or less developed at birth: prenatal experience. No opportunity to use eyes until birth. Visual and taste not expected to be as developed: survival value. Only need to see mother, so don"t need to see that well. Taste need to know if something is dangerous for them. Hearing need to hear where mom is.
