Stage 5: social contract orientation: a good society protects members" basic rights, if it doesn"t questioning of inadequate conventional laws, but, dramatic processes must be adhered to. Stage 6: universal ethical principles: accept that the quest for social justice can force you to break with conventional rules, and also, with democratic processes. Age: pre-conventional elementary school, conventional mid teens, post-conventional rare. Research: colby, kohlberg et al. (1983) longitudinal study dominant reasoning stage by age. Longitudinal study of 10 year old boys. Stage 2: predominated by 10 year olds, goes down as you age. Stage 3: peaks mid teens, and gradually decreases as you age. Stage 5: incredibly rare, appears later in life (30s): walker et al. (1987) cross-sectional study dominant reasoning stage by age. Sequence of stages: no skipping of stages, regression is very rare. Cross-cultural evidence: 27+ cultures support sequence (snarey, 1985), but, cultural differences in highest stage achieved and most common reasoning type.
