Need to understand how genetic info inherited from parents to offspring. Sperm penetrates ovum, cell formed called zygote. Single cell contains 46 chromosomes, 23 from each parent. Segments of dna comprise genes, provide chemical code for development. Results from human genome project estimated chromosomes contain between. 30,000-40,000 genes 1/3 more than simple worm. Zygote doesn"t remain single cell for long quickly divides at exponential rate, growing from 2-4 cells, to 16, etc. until at birth end up with billions of different cells, each with same 46 chromosomes inherited at conception. Each parent can produce more than 8 million different genetic combinations from sperm/ova. Means any given couple in theory could produce 64 trillion genetically distinct offspring. Exception when parents have identical twins monozygotic twins come from same sperm & ovum, which formed 1 zygote & split into 2 separate zygotes.
