Document Summary

Module 2 research methods 1 & 2: key terms. Between-subjects design- an experimental design in which an independent variable is manipulated across separate groups of participants, in order to observe the change in the dependent variable. One group of subjects receives experimental manipulation while the other acts as a control group. Each participant or group participants will take part in only one or two or more conditions. For example: when testing the effects of caffeine on alertness, researchers test the ability to recall lecture information in subjects who drink caffeine verse those who do not drink caffeine. Blinding- when participants do not know whether they belong to the experimental or control group, or which treatment they are receiving. For example: when comparing the effect of drinking caffeinated or de-caffeinated coffee before bedtime, the participants would not know which type of coffee they are drinking. Causation- the suggestion that one variable caused an effect to occur in another variable.
