Document Summary

Actors use strategies to gain support, which can lead to interstate war directly or indirectly. Falkland war can be seen as direct and indirect: example of diversionary war. War started to divert attention from internal conflict. Dealing with at the same time the loud cries of the public to return to democracy. The assumptions of argentine actors determine if this is a direct or indirect cause. Diversionary tactic used to gain public support: maybe had no actual intent to go to war, misperceptions by argentina may have led to war directly, argentina may not have thought britain would fight over the islands. Britain may not have pre decided they would go to war over the islands. But still saw it as an attack on their sovereign territory. The us supported britain: so what may have just been a diversionary tactic may actually have led to interstate war.
