Social movements are interesting because they change the way people think about things in life, but social movements can take many di erent courses. Miriam smith: social movements: purposive collection action whose outcome, in victory as in defeat, transforms the values and institutions of society. Sydney tarrow: collective challenges by people with common purposes and solidarity in sustained interaction with elites, opponents, and authorities. Social movements are about coming together in three di erent spheres/activities. Structural sphere: social movement organizations that come together and make up a collective challenge. Ideational sphere: what are the ideas the uni ed groups use to guide their protest. Performative sphere: social movements try to change peoples thinking by performances they give; like putting petitions in front of individuals.
