POLSCI 2C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: School Zone, Pete Townshend, Totalitarianism
Document Summary
We now shift our focus onto methods of control (how the state seeks control over its citizens and groups of citizens) Factors of torture (+ what differenciates it from other types of treatment) When we talk about torture, we aren"t simply talking about physical discomfort. The violence or threatened violence must be excessive or severe. It must go beyond the idea of what is acceptable for human beings. Not restricted solely to physical pain - also includes psychological acts. Someone can cause another individual mental distress of a severe nature; this would equally constitute torture. Can be aimed at individual or someone they are related to, and presumably someone that they love and would be prepared to protect. See upcoming slides for more in depth purposes. More than just holding or incarcerating an individual (ex: handcuffing someone, the takedown of a suspect even if it includes injury are not torture) Torture is related to the reason why it is used.
