Liberalism is concerned with freedom, esp individual freedom. Liberalism, the theory is not always synonymous with the policy of the liberal party of canada. There are different versions of liberal theory. Emerges in 17th-19th century, largely in england. Written about by john locke, adam smith. U. s declaration of independence has lockean/liberal view. If freedom violated then gov broke contract and can be overthrown. Protect members of society from each other. Legitimate role of state to play in providing public goods ( good that is collectively wanted by the public, but will not spontaneously emerge/ be provided. From negative freedom (freedom from) to positive freedom (freedom to) Have the freedom to make your own decisions/choices. Level the playing field but not all outcomes have to be the same. Increase freedom available to society as a whole. Two grounds on which to justify a hands off approach to the economy: rights.
