PNB 3RM3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Causal Inference, Resource-Based View, Internal Validity
Document Summary
Ways of reducing causal ambiguity in correlational research. Correlational research - research looking for some association between two variables that we measure. Problems: nothing is being manipulated, and we can only conclude what we measure, meaning it will include things you don"t mean to measure. The more alternatives you can think of, the better you can narrow in on a causal statement. Whether self-esteem and neuroticism in a person is related. See if there is a correlation between children"s self-esteem and their parents" self-esteem. Example: gerbner and gross (1976) - whether tv viewing associated with perceived risk of being victim of violent crime. Crime rate (. 41 out of 100 people in reality) Percent violent crime (10%, but 77% in tv) Survey items asking about tv watching and perceived danger. R-squared - 62% in the variance of one of my variables can be accounted for by the other variable. Does not explain 100% of variance in variables.
