Thought experiment: susan thinks of her life as happy; she is married with children and is well, even though her husband is frequently away on business. Later, she discovers he was not on business, he was having an affair. She evaluated her life as happy before the discovery, but does not see it as happy now. P1: if hedonism is true, then our lives go well to the extent that we are pleased. C: hedonism is false (there must be more to happiness than just living pleasant lives) They must insist that pleasure is pleasure regardless of the source. Principle a: if something is good for us, then it must fulfill our desires. Reasons it could be false: something could be good for us, even if it does not fulfill our desires. Principle b: if something fulfills our desires, then it must be good for us.
