PHILOS 2D03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Human Cloning, Human Reproduction, Nuclear Family
Document Summary
Such reactions come both from the man or woman in the street and from the intellectuals, from believers and from atheists, from humanists and scientists. This can be psychologically confusing: kinship confusion. What sort of social identity will someone have? : cloning represents a giant step towards transforming procreation into an act of manufacturing, the child as a product. In natural procreation, human beings come together complementarily male and female, to give existence to another being who is formed, exactly as we were, by what we are: living, hence perishable, hence aspiringly erotic, human beings. In clonal reproduction, by contrast we give existence to a being not by what we are, but by what we intend and design. As with any product of our making the artificer stands above it, not as an equal but as a superior: results are unpredictable in normal circumstances- it"s what makes our offspring normal to us.
