Epicurus (341-270bce: ancient greek philosopher, much knowledge of him was destroyed, epicurean view of death, pleasure and pain. The only thing that is intrinsically good is pleasure. The only thing that is intrinsically bad is pain. If death is extinction, then the dead person doesn"t experience pleasure or pain. No. living longer will not make the experience of ataraxia better or more pleasurable. If you try to prolong your ataraxia then you only lose it b/c that results in the fear of death. Kinetic: pleasures which arouses senses and produces agreeable sensations in us. (i. e. eating, drinking, sex, etc. ) Static: the pleasure one feels when all pain has been removed (not being hungry, thirsty, etc. ) The static pleasure is the goal of kinetic pleasure. (i. e. you eat in order for the static pleasure of not being hungry): kinetic vs. static pleasure, mental pleasure and pain. Mental kinetic pleasure: listening to music, discussing philosophy.
