This is a contingent, empirical claim: not a claim about the meanings of the words mind and mental . On this view, a form of materialism, a pain or a thought is a state of the brain in much the way that, say, a flash of lightning is a certain kind of electrical discharge. This theory is defended by peter carruthers: offers a succinct argument for the mind-brain identity theory and responds to objections.
