Document Summary

Philos 1a03 - jan 27 - symposium (continued) Agathon, the symposium host, and a tragic poet: Eros is the happiest of all the gods. Most poetic - people are most poetic when they fall in love. Eros is wise because he can make anyone a poet. Socrates is the final speaker; but he refuses to make a speech. He wants to praise in reality rather than in appearance. He cannot do this, because he doesn"t know anything. So he does what he always does: question other people. He questions agathon about the speech he has just given. Argues that eros is not happy: only spiritual beings love wisdom, not gods and not regular humans. Philosophers and eros both belong in this intermediate zone. Eros is a philosopher: diotima asks socrates. No, because then he wouldn"t desire it: he who desires does not have that which he desires, eros is not happy because he does not have that which he desires.
