Sepsis shock is a type of distributive shock, which also includes neurogenic and anaphylactic shocks. Other types of shock include hypovolemic, and cardiogenic. All types of shock are potentially fatal and must be treated asap. Sepsis, septic shock and other types of non-bacterial shock are due to dysregulation of immune processes. In 2001 study (us), there was a 28. 6% mortality rate from sepsis (lower in children, higher in elderly); cost was ,000 per case = 16. 7 billion nationwide. A recent study (2011) in canada found similar mortality rates, highlighting the lack of advances in treatment. Those who have an mi are 1/3 as likely to die from the mi as sepsis, and the stroke population are only as likely to die mi and stoke treatment has advanced while sepsis has not. Severe sepsis mortality and septic shock is around 40% vs. 30% for sepsis alone; also noted that 4% were even hospitalized for sepsis more than once during a year.
