Document Summary
Defined as a traumatic injury to the skin. Us 1. 3 million burn injuries need medical attention per year. Almost 6% of the burn injury patients die, and those who have sustained injury are at greater risk of dying. Primarily caused by thermal (most common) or other acute exposures such as extreme cold, electricity, radiation, or chemicals. In canada, for children, scalds are the most common causes of thermal injury with almost half of burns in children being caused by hot liquids and vapours. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree burn terminology has been replaced by superficial, partial-thickness, full-thickness burn and 4th degree. 4th degree describes the most severe burns extending into the muscle, bone, or joints: severity. Minor, moderate or severe (the american burns association grading scale); combines the person"s age with the percentage of surface area affected. Minor: unlikely to need hospitalization; ex. someone aged 10-50 with a partial thickness burn with less than 10% of tbsa.
