Introduction to evidence informed decision making (eidm) in nursing. What is evidence informed decision making? only 30-50% of people receive recommended care. 30-40% of patients do not get treatments that have been proven to be effective. It takes an estimated 15 years to get research into recommended policy and for practitioners to implement research 40% of the appropriate time in practice (antman et al. , 1992). Traditionally it was thought that the only acceptable evidence came from clinically relevant research studies, such as meta-analyses, systematic reviews, or randomized controlled trials. Evidence from research, (aka the most relevant high quality evidence) Clinical state (severity of disease and the setting), Health care resources (financial and human resources, materials), Critical expertise (past experiences & clinical skills) Define : formulate a focused answerable question from the practice situation based on your information needs. Search : efficiently search for research evidence by having a clearly defined question. Appraise : critically and efficiently appraise the research sources.
