Political power between the northern and southern states was fairly even. End of the way slavery was finally over. Separated by slavery states vs non slavery states: the south, culture is still coloured by the fact that southern states has it"s lows, people in the south are not as sharp. New forms of music to appear during the late 1800s: 1/ ragtime 2/ jazz 3/ blues. It become increasingly different to be a black person is the south. If you had a reasonable claim that someone was being racist towards you, you would have no support because the law is enforced by white people (who are most likely racist) We need a generation that doesn"t know how it feels like to be a slave and be able to see the world in a different way. Plaintive vocal sound - lament: songs of complaint, not whining, expressing the difficulties you have.
