Music whose source is within the diegesis. Heard both by the characters within the narrative and the film and the film audience. Known as source music, direct music, or foreground music. Functions include establishing time and place, creating a sense of realism and immediacy, offering ironic moment. i. e. romantic music being played on a record before a murder happens. Referred to as the score, underscore, or background music. Normally originally composed for the specific film (original score) May also include preexisting music adapted for the film i. e. the sting (1973) May also include preexisting music used without adaption i. e. platoon (1986) Score= usually music originally composed to accompany film (typically instrumental) Compiled score= all preexisting music i. e. 2001 a space odyssey (1968) Soundtrack= collection of popular songs used within the film. Most film music will fall somewhere between two extremes of a scale, can shift. Playing the drama= music attempts to reinforce primarily emotional elements within the narrative.
