Main theme= the theme represents the merry men, not robin hood. Initial theme played primarily on bassoon and muted trumpet (comic) Sword fight, same theme as little john battle, more exciting/swords. Quiet variation of the peril theme as marion sees the saxons. Two themes during marion/robin dialog- second theme from opening credits, which is the love theme (or are both?) Love theme usually begins with a jump to a 6th interval. Love theme 1 for the big smooch, big strings/moment of spectacle. Love theme 2, quiet cello, much more intimate. Love theme 2 (from opening credits) gets more dramatic statement with the reveal of richard. Two themes because there are two types of love at play, romantic love between robin and marion, and the most important, love of country. Focus now is on the individual, not a group. First, as america was coming out of depression, and unity was stressed. The blitz (battle of britain) was happening in 1940.
