One of the most prolific composers of the classical era. Father of the symphony / string quartet ( although he did not invent them, he help establish the genre. Conducted a hundred concerts per year while working as a court musician. Wrote new music, string quartets, sonata, operas. He was lonely, since he was isolated in the palace. After the prince"s death, he took 2 trips to england where he composed songs, symphonies for piano. 1795 went to vienna where he wrote oratorios, masses and string quartets. 4 string players and 3 string instruments : 2 violinists, 1 violist, 1 cellist. Genre : multi-movement piece to be played by a string quartet. Hayden was not the first two write a string quartet, but wrote the most string quartets. Musical movement - long section of music with silence at the beginning and end, usually contrasting in style and tempo, but is often unified harmonically or melodically.
