Note: there are three other things that affect legibility: alignment, paragraph articulation, & measure, but these address blocks of text & are less relevant for a book cover. Like an art, it is not absolute, typographic legibility conventions should be used as guidelines along with an awareness of history & the visual world around you. The upper parts of letters provide more visual cues for legibility. The right halves of letters more recognizable. The most frequently used letters are also the most frequently confused. Lowercase letter have distinct shape, rich contrasts. These sales are stored in our memorizes until confronted once again in a text. Uppercase letters are uniform, there can be loss of pattern & shape recognition: all ll the same space. Case: problem 1: highway signs aren"t necessarily readable/legible, problem 2: no way that they can replace the signs so they cant make the signs bigger, solution:
