Observing = paying attention to the things that are already happening around you in the world. Doing = activity you do in the world. Your project should focus on something you have observed rather than something performed for the camera/microphone/device. The art of observation begins with immersing ourselves in the textures and tones of life. We have become addicted to merely looking at things and beings. The more we regress from seeing to looking at the world through the ever- more-perfected machinery of viewfinders, Tv tubes, vcrs, microscopes, stereoscopes the less we see, the more numbed we become to the joy and the pain of being alive, and the further estranged we become from ourselves and all others. To provide an opportunity for the viewer to experience something familiar in a new way or to draw their attention to something they had not noticed before = deep observation.

In this area of interest that focus on cellular adaption and neoplasia; infection, immunity, and inflammation; and/or hematological disorders. You might include:

* 1-2 journal articles or websites

* Book chapters

Your summary of EACH reading should be at least one paragraph (100-200 words) and include the following information:

All references must be cited using APA Style format.

* Number of pages read

* Keywords you used to find the reading

* Link to the reading

* Why you selected the reading

* Main point of the reading

* Describe how the health deviations you read about alter normal physiology.

* Provide your key take away from the reading. This could be something that made you pause, changed your thinking, supported your thinking, or made you question something.

* In your post, respond to the following questions: How do you know that the material you have found and read is reliable? How do you know that it is valid?

We have looked many topics thus far in biology, and have learned how to think critically. As the last assignment, a right of passage into applying scientific principles to the outside world, you will write a paper over a controversial topic in biology. You will approach the matter from a scientific perspective. This means you will have to read scientific journal articles.How to approach a topic and the information you should include:1) What is currently known about the subject? (requires research: must be actual scientific articles not webpages, philosophical diatribes, or some shady article you found in wikipedia)2) What areas of the topic are not well understood, or needs further research? (make sure you really do your homework, don't accept wide ranging statements made on politically driven websites)2) Discuss where the controversy arises when the science meets society. Why does the topic really matter to the advancement of the human race? Focus on things that can be achieved in the time that we have available and using equipment that we already have.

You may have other ideas, but consider these options:

* Do you think that there was a way to break open the strawberry cells more efficiently?

* Do you think that your DNA was at a suitable concentration to allow you to work with it effectively â or should it perhaps have been resuspended/eluted in a smaller/larger volume?

* Do you think that you had enough replicates of the DNA concentration in order for you to know whether you were getting an accurate reading?

* Did you need more practice pipetting small volumes before moving on to using the NanoDrop? Did you need more practice using the NanoDrop itself?

* Do you think that there is a step that you could have performed more quickly or with less error (e.g. where you lost time or spilled sample, but could improve on this next time)?
