Creativity, success paradigms, the value of failure. Ideas: a visual language for communicating concepts: in any language there"s codes and conventions, we need to understand these cods and conventions in order to communicate. Subject matter + medium + form + context = meaning. We can think any other type of media like an ensemble. To interpret a work of art is to understand it in language: doesn"t have to be a picture in a museum, can be an advertisement. Interpretations imply a worldview: how we interpret an artifact, we bring and import our own worldview, we might align or misalign because we don"t agree, or read it against the grain and find new meaning. All art is in part about the world in which it emerged: what we are producing in this class is all part about the world. First assignment: think of an everyday observation and how it connects to the world. Roland barthes: french semiotician cultural signification.
