Patients also present with diverse variations in body habitus & implanted devices. Some devices may be safe at certain bo strengths but not at others. Mri grown in complexity over last 20 years. Wide range of field strength, different machine configurations, coil design, bore width. Many combinations exist that could contribute to a safety hazard under some conditions - reconfigurations may not be a hazard. Lecture is not a definitive safety guide but general introduction to the safety topic. Acr white paper on safety followed by car. Psychological & biological effects - some are transient with no long term effects, where some may cause death. In 2005 the ashtami reviewed terms to describe mri safety of implants & other medical devices that can pose a risk. Devices are divided into 3 categories: mri safe, mri conditional, mri unsafe. Item that poses no known hazards in all mri imaging environments. Non conducting, non metallic, & non magnetic (ie plastic petri dish)
