Initial exam is ultrasound stones- cholesterol and pigment/family history of the disorder, age older than 40 years, excess weight, and female. / appearance- central core of calcium, periphery calcified, laminated appearance (with alternating opaque and lucent rings, nonopaque stone may contain gas-filled fissures that produce the mercedes-benz sign. Calculi in the gallbladder (solid arrows) and bile ducts (open arrow). Calculi (arrowheads) lie in common bile duct, some of which overlie the spine and are difficult to detect. If only a few stones- round, many faceted (cut into a particular shape), can also be grain like or sand like. Mercedes-benz sign of fissuring in a gallstone (arrow).
