LIFESCI 2N03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Weight Loss, Nicotine, Leptin
Document Summary
There"s a snowball effect once you lose weight. Hormones make it hard to go back to a healthy weight. Decreases appetite, after we eat food, leptin is secreted to supress our appetite. Makes us want to be more physically active (example, you"ve been seated for a long time and you want to move around, leptin is doing this) Choosing to walk vs take the car (not exercise, more of getting up throughout the day) Was considered an anti-obesity hormone because it decreases appetite. Even when administered by injection, does not do its job (after resistance) Insulin promotes fat development, promotes storage (glucose and fat) Diabetics - when their body can"t produce insulin anymore. They have insulin injections but this causes weight gain. Obesity, less dopamine receptors, therefore you have to eat more sugar for that good feeling. Blocks leptin from making us feel full, we continue to eat and consume food.
