LABRST 2G03 Lecture 2: Lecture 2-3 Labour 2G03 .docx
Document Summary
After ww2, big nations wanted to prevent more economic collapse (since it caused hardship and spread rapidly as great depression) From 1947, us and ussr were rivals, had states competing against each other. Us wanted to ensure stability in system, but also make sure workers weren"t swayed by communism. In 30s, this had been done through new deal: massive public works, social security, unemployment insurance, housing. In 50s, much more aggressive targeting of communism directly: perceived companies to have sympathetic communist values, didn"t want to look like socialists. Unions able to function more properly and get better wages, but they couldn"t be as militant. Better public healthcare in canada, unemployment benefits, etc. (golden years) Still many jobs that were bad: sweatshops (employed low-paid immigrant workers) Bracero program (brought mexicans as temporary foreign workers to work on farms), ended in 1964.
