- Locals- BASIC UNIT OF A UNION MADDATED BY THE LAW. Local union is the
organization if you belong to a union member. Local representation. Some
locals are spread out cause workers are spread out- flight attendants (not
local). Idea is to localize as much as possible.
TYPESSS…..
- Workplace based- most common. Organization to represent the workers as
one working community. Larger idrustrial unions- one local for that
workplace. This is the idea of like a mass union. Large number of workers.
- Trade unions (craft) - This model replaced an older model which is called the
trade based model this is that model that craft unions used. oRganizing a
trade and trying to control that trade. Means try to organizae everyone that
works in that trade. Organize based on the work that they do, most are still
local- like electrical workers of Hamilton. Want to control the trade in the
area. When the trade model is dominat the workplace has more than one
union in it. All different trades will belong to different unions. Bargaining is
controlled by the trade for contracts or short term they set standard rates,
some trades locals get specific about these terms.
- Hiring hall trchiniwqiue used by craft unions, still is a model used by craft
unions. In particular control the trade when the workers are spread out. Ex.
Theather stage worker highly skilled workers have a union called I.A.T.S.E,
their spread out how do you control the trade the work. The hiring hall
comes in place. Make all workers go to the hirirng hall and get your workers
from. Established in a union then on the list of the hiring hall. That means you
get hired at a job which means that gives a whole lot of control to the unions.
Hiring things through their hall, and whoever get hired through there. It gets
expanded over time and other idrustryies use it shipping and other idrutries
that move around. Unload the ship organize the workers tell them to go to
the hiring hall. This was a model in the 50s adopted by the teamsters- for
some time the largest union in north America they used the hiring hall
method.
- Large local- more common in the last 30 years. Evolved because of union
strategies- expand their local unions take in more groups of workers. They
don’t want small locals want big ones. They take workers in every indruty
into one. Confusing cause supposed to be local but they take everything.
UFCW- mantioba members of one local. Service indruties aposted the same
model. So that if they lose employees in one place then they have more to
balance. UFCW- grocery stores, loblaws, price chopper, - getting strength in
numbers.
- Structural (public sector)- common in the public secotr tied to a certain
government structure, CUP5167 LOCAL FOR THE WORKERS IN THE CITY
OF HAMILTON. Organizes worker in this area. Have workers from lots of
different groups doing lots of work. Like librarians and utilities workers will
be under one because of the same government structure.
