LABRST 1C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Precarious Work, Neoliberalism, Deindustrialization
Document Summary
The way work is organized has changed dramatically in the past 30 years, in ontario. 1/10 jobs are temporary, part time, self employed or on contract - which are characteristics of precarious work. Workers do not have a xed or stable income, they are unsure of the money they will take home or if they will earn anything at all. They are not protected by the same laws which protect full time employees, workers receive no bene ts working in services making minimum wage or sub contracting. There are more workers in precarious work due to displacement, technological advances and deregulation which makes sub contracting and precarious agencies possible. This results in lower wages and families must have multiple members working longer hours to support themselves. Agencies: made possible through the deregulation of the labour market, began in the us mid-west in the 1920s and now have reached countries worldwide.
