LABRST 1A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Visible Minority, Neoliberalism, Household Debt
Document Summary
Look at the importance of politics and policy, political shift in the 1970"s. Unions have been under attack, in the most direct way by governments and businesses (attitudes that if there"s a way to undermine unions they will do it) Policy changes that make it easier for businesses to move (want the better deal) If the unions don"t agree to their terms (ie. wage reductions), they threaten to close their doors and move their business elsewhere (where theirs cheaper labour) Neoliberal age is all about market freedom. Unions are now viewed as getting in the way of the free market (say its better than kensien economics) Business does not always do best, doesn"t always benefit themselves and workers (that"s why they government governed these decisions) However, neoliberalism states that businesses know what is best for them (all about market freedom) Unions & elitism are people who pretend to know better than what the market is doing.
