Childhood was a lot more difficult back then. Universal education was a new thing back then. Younger boys- important that they pitched in cleaning, delivering papers, riding behind the coal cart = foraging (ride behind and collect coal for the furnace. Domestic servant- much more common than it would have been in the 20th century. Stretching resources; taking in extra boarders people to come live with you if you had room in your home, taking care of extra family members- extended, stretching food and other resources to last longer. When father aged a little bit became more established in the workforce, children could start helping out. When they got older fact of life that many working families had older family members. Older men resented the most too old or sick to work, did not help women in the household (source of division in the family) Older women still took care of the household cooking, cleaning, etc.
