Document Summary

The way in which actions are directed toward controls within the system. Three major issues to be considered: the features and properties of controls, control panels and arrangements, specialized controls. The primary function of a control is to transmit control information to some device, mechanism or system. A distinction between info that can be transmitted discretely or continuously. Discrete controls: can be set to only one of a limited number of conditions, ex, light switch, windshield wipers, typing. Continuous controls: can transmit info from any value along a continuum, ex, volume control on your stereo. Ex, large vs small; finger or foot stomp: important to classify controls along the above dimensions for best possible control for a given situation within a system, see slide 14. Controls are rarely presented in isolation but are usually included with other controls in a control panel. Critical that a control can be easily, rapidly and correctly identified.
