Document Summary

We make much more t4 than we make t3. We use more t3 in the body because it"s much more potent and has more active sites in the body. When t4 reaches a tissue that requires t3, the tissue can cleave off the extra iodide. Inhibits osteoclasts in response to elevated calcium levels. We already have high calcium from diet, don"t need more right now. Used as treatment for women with increased bone loss (osteoporosis) Tsh released constantly to the thyroid gland but it cannot make any because no iodide. Not dangerous as long as you can get the hormones in balance again. Constant stimulation leads to an enlarged thyroid gland. Small enough -- supplement diet with iodide -- possibly shrink. If too large - can never get rid of it unless its cut out. But you need to bring them back to normal. 4 pea-sized glands found on back of thyroid gland.
