Document Summary

When a hormone gets released, they float around until they find a receptor that matches their shape. Hormones only affect target cells with specific membrane proteins called receptors. One hormone can have several functions in the body. Have many receptors, these are tied to different functions. Excess hormone (we have too much hormone circulating) A response that may decrease number of receptors on the cell - decreased sensitivity. Deficiency of hormone (not enough hormone), may produce an increase in the number of receptors. Act on distant targets and travel in blood. Moves through interstitial space (not through blood) to move from one cell type to another. Endothelial cells release nitric oxide - travel to smooth muscle cells via interstitial space - vasodilation cells via interstitial space - vasodilation. Act on the same cell that secretes them. Can act on the same cell or same cell type. White blood cells send these autocrine responses to neighboring white blood cells.
