Document Summary

Pulmonary ventilation - mechanical flow of air into and out of the lungs the physical movement. External respiration - exchange of gases between air in the lungs and blood in pulmonary capillaries. Pull out carbon dioxide out of our blood. Internal respiration - exchange of gasses between blood in systemic capillaries and tissue cells. Cellular respiration is the use of the oxygen by your cells. Diffusion of gasses through the respiratory membrane depends upon four factors: Two very thin membranes, basement membrane and simple squamous epithelium. Membrane thickness doesn"t really change very much from breath to breath. There are some diseases that alter membrane thickness. Pneumonia - adds extra layers of fluid that the gas has to get through. Diffusion depends on solubility (is it easy to dissolve, super soluble?) Measure of how easily a gas diffuses through a liquid or tissue. Carbon dioxide is 20 times more diffusible than oxygen.
