KINESIOL 2Y03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Taste, Microvillus, Medulla Oblongata
Document Summary
Specialized regions for taste are primarily found on our tongue. Specialized receptors for taste are found in ridges on the tongue called papillae. Covers the trachea so when you swallow food doesn"t go down trachea. Form a v-shaped structure towards back of tongue. Different amounts of taste buds, except filiform papillae - their job is to create rough form on tongue to process food - most abundant rough form on tongue to process food - most abundant. Depolarize whole cell, neurotransmitter released at end (without travelling action potential) Peak out to oral cavity via pores called taste pores. Gustatory receptor cells - replaced every 10 days. Near basal cells = connective tissue layer. Taste buds have 5 different receptor types but a gustatory receptor cell only has one. Each taste bud can contain all of these (but will have more of one than other) Salt and sour have ions in them and we can use these for depolarization.
