Genes are all there, but not all are expressed. Most of our cells contain the same genes but only certain genes are transcribed in the cells of each type of tissue. There are also differences in gene expression at different life stages. Gene expression is a very complex process in eukaryotes and there are several different ways to regulate expression. It is advantageous to both prokaryotes and eukaryotes to regulate activity of their genes. This helps the cells adapt to changes in their environment (eg. bacteria expressing genes to use different food sources); the main reason in eukaryotes is cell specialization. )t also helps save the cell"s energy since transcription and translation. Translation uses a lot of energy; don"t waste energy when the gene is not.
