HTHSCI 1LL3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Reverse Cholesterol Transport, Phospholipid, Glycerol
Document Summary
Lipids can begin to be digested in the mouth and stomach but usually major absorption in small intestine (enzymes are released from the pancreas) Fatty acids are stored in muscle and adipose tissue. Chylomicron (long chains of fatty acids are packaged here- fat delivery system from the intestinal tract) go into lacteal cells (lymph system), and then to the bloodstream. Glucose: has to be broken down into fat to be stored, since we can"t store carbohydrates. Lpl -- lipoprotein lipase: can take the fatty acids out and bring to adipose tissue for storage and muscle for fuel. Glycerol backbone with 3 fatty acids attached monoglyceraldehyde and fatty acid chylomicron. Lingual and gastric lipases are most active with short and medium chain fatty acids-- like what is found in milk (more active in infants and young children) Short and medium fat chains are more polar, they are able to go into the bloodstream.
