HTHSCI 1H06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Thymus, Neutrophil, Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue
Document Summary
The immune system is principally concerned with the maintenance of homeostasis. Immunology: is the study of multi-layered host-defense system that protects us against pathogens, tumours, toxins, prions (malfolded proteins), allergens etc. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an example of a bacteria that will cause tuberculosis. Influenze and hiv are examples of viruses that will cause the flu and aids. System summary: intrinsic barriers pre-formed barriers to prevent invasion of pathogens, toxins etc. (no infection at this stage) If a barrier is breached and a pathogen gets in, there are mechanisms already in place to kill it. This is known as : immediate innate response (0-4 hours) removes the agent in a timely fashion through non-specific and constant effectors, early induced innate response (4-96 hours) recognizes the microbial- associated molecular patterns. Will call for help to other cells (recruitment cells) to enter, and help kill the infectious agent: adaptive immune response (>96 hours) very specific, slow and improves throughout response.
