Not the same as sex addiction: whether addictions might be positive, can we reconcile some utility/benefit with the concept of addiction, psychological problems associated with digital use. Depressed so they use internet, use internet then depressed. Digital culture: who we are, how our lives are structured, how we understand ourselves and the world, mediated. Is it about addiction or some other way to explain what"s going on. Something that might look like addiction, but become so important to us . Phones and anxiety: phone becomes escape the gaze of others, provide chance to look busy and connected but masking ones anxiety. Illusion of being in contact with people, not benefit so much. Developing digital addiction: young comes up with internet addiction, took criteria for gambling addiction, modified it to see who has internet addiction 1998 (where there was no social media, internet was different still possibility of it being addictive)
