Moral panic, general anxiety around female sexuality (victorian era), helped to legitimize concept (were doing this in present time too, not just in the past where stories become exaggerated) Satyriasis: intense sexual desire involving loss of control and sexual violence in men: early medicalization, onanism - masturbation (thought of as disease, and also cause of disease, if you do it you"ll go crazy) Sex with people you didn"t feel deep emotional connection to, emotional dependency, affairs. In the same way he drank, felt deeply shameful loss of control, same was true for sex: took 12 step model and modified them to come up with a cure for sex addiction. Same way alcoholics practiced sobriety, people addicted to sex need to practice sexual sobriety, but wasn"t described in terms of abstinence. Felt lonely/empty and began to lose control over sexual activity, harms relationships, work life, sex functions the same way as alcohol for someone else: provides medical explanation for objectual behaviour.
