Dichotomy between narratives of pharmaceuticals and narcotics: one xes, one destroys. By school age, children recognize some drugs as good (used by good people ) and others bad (used by bad people ) Good = use when people get sick vs. bad = for bad reasons. When using good drugs in a bad way , users may justify it on the basis that its a medicine it can"t be that bad . In industrial societies, drugs that weaken productivity viewed negatively (narcotics), drugs that boost productive viewed positively (medicinal) Cocaine can boost productivity, not just a party drug. Alcohol doesn"t boost productivity, but not illegal. Dosage continuum medicinal < ______ > narcotic. Misadventuring: take medicinal drug because want to get high. What we believe the drug will do shapes where drugs end up. Heroin = buy illicitly, methadone = obtain from clinic because had problem from heroin, morphine = in hospital settings.
