A disease that is called addiction about biology (in brain/way body responds to behaviours/chemicals) Use of drugs thus a symptom; addict = not bad, but merely sick. Continued addictive behaviour/substance is symptom of underlying disease called addiction not blaming the person. Sickness robs individuals of personal control limits ability to make choice due to physiological process. Compassionate md-led care the best response = need doctors to x it. Dependence: once addicted there body depends on that substance and when they don"t get that substance they start to experience withdrawal. Tolerance: over time you need more and more to achieve the same effect. Withdrawal: a syndrome (headaches, nauseous, strange behaviour, hallucinations) understood as response to substance not entering body. Progressive: use to feel normal , downward spiral, bottoming out. Over time, the disease gets worse/intensi es progressive disease. Permanent: once an addict, always an addict.
